With the DAAD Gallery Berlin

In June 2025, I had the honour of being Mel Chin & Jess Row’s hype girl for the For Real For Real exhibition that was installed in Berlin’s Kreuzberg over the summer. I was invited to create a book for the show curated by Claudia Rankine, John Lucas & Russel Salmon as part of the work of the Racial Imaginary Institute and do a reading based on the work. What emerged was “Spirits In The Cypher” an ode to dance and political movements of Black liberation. The book contains images from my film ‘Joy’ and my writing on the themes. What’s particularly special for me is that the book is bound in an original T Shirt form the BLM demo from 2022 where Joy was shot. Thank you to Mic Oala for having a spare so that I could continue the resonance over image, sound, page and text.
